Among the guests to 2016 CBCE there is a major player, Steve Hindy, founder and President of Brooklyn Brewery in New York, the U.S..
It’s very interesting to note that persons named Steve tend to lead an extraordinary life, such as Steve Jobs from Apple, and the protagonist of our introduction.
Before founding Brooklyn Brewery, Steve Hindy used to be an accredited correspondent of Associated Press in the Middle East. Started in 1979, he roved all over this area frequented by wars for a total of five and half years. For many times he risked his life in interviewing and reporting in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Sudan and so forth. It’s hard for many people to believe that he has such an experience. He told us that, his last night in Beirut (a city of Lebanon) saw the explosion of a mortar in the hotel he was staying. What’s astonishing for others is that our “naughty” protagonist picked up as memorial a shell fragment from the ruins, which was still hot then.
Then how was his talent as a brewer excavated? Well, this is a more interesting experience. After working in the Middle East for years, Steve made the acquaintance of many diplomats stationed Saudi Arabia. As we all know, alcoholic drinks are prohibited by the Islamic culture, so it’s very difficult to buy beer there. As a fan of home-brewing, Steve was invited by the embassies to make beer. As it turned out, his beer enjoyed great popularity among the diplomats. This is how his talent as a brewer was excavated.
After returning to New York, Steve became an international news editor of The New York Daily News, but, although busied with work, he did not give up his home-brewing cause. Always propelled by this call, he found his neighbor Tom Potter, a banker, and they prepared to found Brooklyn Brewery.
After founding this brewery, he devoted himself to the tide of craft beer movement in the U.S., and became a man of some consequence. He used to be board member and president of the U.S. Brewers Association, as well as board member of Beer Institute.
Having switched to the profession of brewing, he nevertheless hasn’t forgotten that he used to be a correspondent. As a matter of fact, he has published many articles about craft beer in many media, including The New York Times and Vice Media. He is also a coauthor of “Beer School: Bottling Success at the Brooklyn Brewery”, and has independently published “The Craft Beer Revolution: How a Band of Microbrewers is Transforming the World’s Favorite Drink”.
Steve has made lots of keynote speeches in craft beer conferences held in the U.S., the UK and Australia. As a special guest of The Beer Link, he is coming to China for the first time to attend 2016 CBCE. After receiving our invitation, he expressed his sincere hope to visit China and to share his entrepreneurial experiences and stories about craft beer with fans and practitioners of the industry. The theme of his keynote speech at 2016 CBCE will be “The Craft Beer Revolution Goes Global”. In the past 30 years, the craft beer market in the U.S. has witnessed continuous growth, while more and more craft beer brands have transformed the traditional ideas of Americans about beer to a very large extent. At 2016 CBCE, Steve will explain in simple terms the development and revolution experienced by craft beer in the U.S. with the participants. There is no doubt that the development course of the Brooklyn Brewery in New York into a second-to-none craft beer benchmark in the world and the successful experience he is about to share will significantly benefit and inspire the fans and practitioners of the industry.
2016 CBCE, which is about to be held between May 26 and 27, will be a gathering of craft beer giants in the world, and an industry event integrating academic exchange, experience sharing and cultural communication for all the fans and practitioners.
